5 most savage quotes from damning report on the ‘digital gangsters’ at Facebook

TwitterFacebook

The results of an 18-month investigation into Facebook are out and they’re not pretty.

The UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee (DCMS) published a lengthy report filled with harsh words for the social media giant, which is accused of intentionally violating privacy laws.

In a statement, Facebook’s UK public policy manager, Karim Palant, said the company supports “effective privacy legislation that holds companies to high standards in their use of data and transparency for users,” and has already made “substantial changes” to its political advertising policies.

Here’s a look at the most brutal takedowns of Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook in the report.  Read more…

Privacy activists say online ad industry knowingly violated GDPR

TwitterFacebook

Privacy advocates claim that an organization that represents the online ad industry knew they would be violating privacy laws, but did so anyway, in an updated complaint filed against the group as well as Google.

On Tuesday, the group filed new evidence with data protection authorities in the UK and Ireland against Google and the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), the industry association that creates standards and guidelines for online ad practices.

The new filing includes documents which allegedly show that the IAB knew its ad system would be illegal under the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, a law that protects personal data and privacy for individuals within the European Union. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

Skiing is apparently more fun when there’s a horse involved.

Jennifer Staggemeyer was driving through Harmony, Minnesota when she spotted what she thought was a horse and buggy stuck on the side of the road. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a man on skis being pulled by the seemingly driverless buggy.

OH BUGGY: At least some of us are enjoying this snow. Check out this Amish man SKIING behind his horse buggy! Thanks to Jenn Staggemeyer, of Waukon, for capturing and sharing this! pic.twitter.com/kG2VZrHajq

Gwyneth Paltrow to say bye to Pepper Potts after ‘Avengers: Endgame’

TwitterFacebook

Gwyneth Paltrow will reportedly exit the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame. The actress told Variety that the April film will be her last hurrah as Stark Industries exec Pepper Potts, whom she debuted in 2008 at the start of the MCU.

“I mean, I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point,” she said (Pepper suited up in 2013’s Iron Man 3 after nearly dying in battle). “I feel very lucky that I did it, because I actually got talked into it…It was such a wonderful experience making the first ‘Iron Man’ and then to watch how important it has become to the fans.”

New Audi feature helps drivers catch more consecutive green lights

TwitterFacebook

More Audi drivers can experience that rush from hitting a stretch of green traffic lights in a row.

The car maker previously showed off its Traffic Light Information system about two years ago to give drivers more information about red lights and how long they’d be waiting. But this week Audi is all about green light information.

With what Audi is calling Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory (GLOSA), drivers are connected to city infrastructure and can “game” the system by going a recommended speed limit. The dash indicates the best speed to catch the “green wave” based on the car’s position, speed limits in the area, and signal timing. It’s not that far off from the premise of timed streetlights to encourage driving the speed limit, but it’s a helpful boost. Read more…

Legendary scientist who predicted climate change effects dead at 87

TwitterFacebook

In 1975, geologist Wallace Broecker penned a scientific paper warning about the still little-discussed concept of “global warming.” Forty-four years later Broecker has died at 87, but not before proving himself a legendary earth scientist, repeatedly underscoring that amassing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has stoked relentless climate change.

Ancient air trapped in ice cores proves, indisputably, that Earth’s carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations are the highest they’ve been in at least 800,000 years — though other measures show that CO2 concentrations are now likely the highest they’ve been in 15 million years. The planet is responding: 18 of the last 19 years have been the warmest on record.  Read more…
