Tinder partners with GLAAD to make swiping more inclusive

TwitterFacebook

Matching with potential partners online has never been easier. Since 2012, Tinder has been a go-to for single people trying to find everything from their next fling to a long-lasting relationship.

Today, the dating app announced that it’s working to become more inclusive and help users express their sexuality. Just in time for Pride Month, Tinder teamed up with GLAAD to allow users to add more information on their sexual orientation to their profile. This way, the app can tailor their matches based on their sexual preferences.

“We want all of our users to feel empowered expressing who they are while connecting with new people — and we’re always working to make that easier for our users on Tinder,” said Tinder CEO, Elie Seidman, in a statement. “Dating apps are invaluable platforms for connecting the LGBTQ community, and we’re beyond proud to continue our efforts, in partnership with GLAAD, to improve the community’s experience on Tinder.” Read more…

Microsoft is making Xbox body wash that absolutely no one asked for

TwitterFacebook

Everyone named Kyle is legally obligated to buy this Xbox soap and then never use it.

Apparently, 2019 is the year of consumeristic fever dreams. Brands aren’t holding back, especially when it comes to collaborations. After all, it hasn’t even been two full months since Forever 21 dropped a bizarre line with USPS (yes, as in the United States Postal Service).

And now this: Xbox flavored (?) line of toiletries including deodorant, body spray, and shower gel. Unilever, Axe’s parent company, is teaming up with Microsoft in order to make this collab happen. The products will be released in July in Australia and New Zealand under Axe’s international line, Lynx. Still with me?  Read more…

Instagram proudly highlights how limited organic reach has become

TwitterFacebook

When announcing a new product, it make sense to include testimonials from customers who rave about how it’s exactly what they need in these new and exciting times. What make less sense, however, is to simultaneously highlight a quote from one of those same customers belittling your core offering.

But hey, Facebook-owned Instagram has always been a trendsetter that loves to go its own way. It once again reminded us of this fact with a June 4 blog post trumpeting the ability for brands to promote influencers’ sponsored posts that just so happened to include some perhaps unintentional shade.

The damaging quote, presented in bold and oversized font, comes from the vice president of brand communications at Old Navy and emphasizes the fact that organic reach on the platform — i.e. the ability for people to see your posts without you having to first pay to promote said posts — is mostly a thing of the past.  Read more…

This absurdist parody script of an ‘Ellen’ episode will make the mom within you scream

TwitterFacebook

There’s nothing that moms love more than extreme couponing, telling you to get off your phone, and daytime TV talkshows. Specifically, Ellen

According to the latest parody script from comedian Keaton Patti, the audience for Ellen consists of literally “every human mom.” Well maybe not Patti himself, but the “bot” he’s “forced” to watch another 1,000 hours of a specific show, creating an absurdist script approximating the show’s language.

Previously, this “bot” has envisioned scripts for a White House press briefing, an Olive Garden commercial, and even a Ted Talk. This time though, it’s spit out two faux pages of a script that absolutely roasts Ellen Degeneres and her audience. Read more…

Apple doesn’t backtrack the way Steve Jobs did. That’s a problem.

TwitterFacebook

When Apple Senior VP and noted dad-joke-maker Craig Federighi announced Monday that iTunes would soon add access to Mail and Safari, a handful of “whoops” from the audience suggested some Apple fans were taking him seriously.

That’s not surprising, given that these new moves came as part of a litany of features iTunes has added over the years. The whole point of the joke was that it sounds like something Apple would do.

“Nailed it!” Federighi told the crowd of developers at WWDC in San Jose before revealing that, in fact, the functionality of iTunes would now be split among three apps new to the Mac (Music, Podcasts, and TV).  Read more…

Best gifts for high school grads: What they actually want

TwitterFacebook

As you can probably tell by the grad party invitations plastering your fridge, it’s high school graduation season. Shopping for a high school grad can be daunting — do you go for something fun or something practical?

You know they’ll need some basic, essential items if they’re planning on moving out on their own, whether that’s a college dorm or their own apartment. The good news there is that they’re likely starting with nothing, so you have a ton of room to work with. You could help them stock their place with a coffee maker, a new 4K TV, or pillows to name a few items.

Apple’s new $6,000 Mac Pro is a monster of a computer inside and out

TwitterFacebook

We finally got a good look at the new Mac Pro launching this fall and it’s as monstrous as Apple boasted about during its announcement at WWDC 2019.

With a design that throws it back to the old “cheese grater” aluminum tower, the new Mac Pro, which starts at $5,999, and the $4,999 Apple-designed 32-inch Pro Display XDR monitor are quite the pair to soak in.

Apple didn’t let anyone touch the new Mac Pro, but we got to ogle it from all angles and check out a few demos of the most powerful Mac chewing through Logic audio streams and 8K-resolution Final Cut Pro X projects with ease.

Google Cloud’s extended outage was a big headache for small stores

TwitterFacebook

A significant outage on Sunday caused a host of online services to go down, including Snapchat, YouTube, and Gmail.

The Google Cloud outage also caused problems with Shopify, an e-commerce and point-of-sale platform which powers thousands of online and physical stores around the world.

While the Google Cloud and Shopify outages were largely resolved by Sunday evening, the extended downtime also left some businesses in disarray, leaving orders unfulfilled, and crucially, missed sales.

Mackenzie Stith, who works for Pratt Daddy Crystals in Los Angeles, said the outage had “completely destroyed our day.” Read more…

Everything Apple revealed at WWDC 2019

TwitterFacebook

At its annual WWDC developer conference on Monday, Apple showed off new iOS features (including dark mode), unveiled iPadOS, and finally revealed its long-rumored Mac Pro.

Oh, and the company officially killed iTunes. Here’s everything Tim Cook and friends revealed at WWDC.

iOS 13

iPhone users can expect better maps and camera features in the latest iOS. Even logging into apps will improve with Apple-based sign-ins (which should make it a lot easier to delete Facebook).

Face ID is supposed to respond more quickly, and dark mode will finally be available for all native Apple apps including Notes, Music, and Mail. (The feature can be built into third-party apps as well.) You can  set dark mode to turn on at a certain time, or just keep it on constantly. Read more…
