‘Brittany Runs A Marathon’ has heart but raises questions

TwitterFacebook

When I first stumbled upon the trailer for Brittany Runs A Marathon, I was worried. A narrative that centers around a woman in her pursuit of weight loss via an enormous physical feat, i.e. a marathon, has the potential to be extremely tone deaf and surface level if not executed with the right amount of sensitivity and care. The film is funny, and Jillian Bell soars, but my suspicions were unfortunately somewhat correct.

The jarring part of the story is that it begins with Brittany going on an ill-advised trip to the doctor; she’s hoping to be prescribed Adderall in a thinly veiled attempt to take the drug for what the viewer can assume to be recreational purposes. The doctor she visits denies her a prescription and instead immediately instructs her to lose 55 pounds.  Read more…

Tom Holland assures D23 Expo fans that he isn’t going to stop being Spider-Man

TwitterFacebook

Even if he’s out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland’s time as Spider-Man isn’t done.

He’s still under contract for one more go as Spidey of course, as he himself said back in 2016. But speaking to Entertainment Weekly at D23 Expo, Holland seemed downright jubilant about his future as Marvel’s — but not necessarily the MCU’s — friendly neighborhood wall-crawler.

“[A]ll I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life,” Holland said. “It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.” Read more…

YouTube belatedly decides to ban intentionally disturbing ‘kids’ videos

TwitterFacebook

Better late than never, I guess.

YouTube, everyone’s favorite place to become radicalized, announced this week that it will no longer allow videos targeted at children that have specific types of disturbing content. This move follows years of criticism that the video hosting site allowed bad actors to put violent and otherwise troubling content in front of kids.

“[Content] that contains mature or violent themes that explicitly targets younger minors and families in the title, description and/or tags will no longer be allowed on the platform,” reads the policy update published earlier this week.  Read more…

Watch this dog one-up Marilyn Monroe’s famous subway grate moment

TwitterFacebook

It may not be the Lexington Ave and 52nd St. subway grate that transfixed the world when a gust of air blew Marilyn Monroe’s dress skyward, but the effect is the same. And the star this time is a fluffy dog.

This pooch, named Zoey, is just trying to beat the heat during a blazing Texas summer. When she found a sidewalk vent spouting a constant stream of cool, rushing air… she just parked herself and enjoyed the ride.

The rest is (better than) history. Read more…

Spider-Man love is all over Disney’s big D23 Expo after the Sony split news

TwitterFacebook

Spider-Man might be back in the hands of Sony, but Marvel stans stan on.

Disney’s biennial D23 Expo happens to fall just days after the not-yet-entirely-official-but-still-real-enough news that Marvel and Sony have parted ways on their joint Spider-Man endeavor. And judging by the fans on social media, many are still healing from those still-fresh wounds.

One dedicated Spider-stan took the time to arrange a small memorial outside the Anaheim Convention Center, where D23 unfolds. It’s a small gesture that’s made a big splash among fans online.

Here’s another, photographic look at that cute memorial: Read more…

Watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez play with a penguin because it’s pure, uncut goodness

TwitterFacebook

The world can be a cruel, unforgiving place.

But, somehow, watching Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez play and dance with a penguin makes everything just a little bit better. Even if only for a moment.

On Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a video of herself and her flipper-sporting friend engaged in a round of what looks to be playful dance. Seriously, it’s adorable. The penguin is all the way in.

“A new day, a new friend,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote of her encounter.

Importantly, Ocasio-Cortez is not roaming around Antarctica. Rather, she appears to be in a science museum or zoo. The display next to the penguin enclosure includes facts about African Penguins — which have a home in the Maryland Zoo, among other places. Read more…

Pixar’s ‘Soul’ will be an existential journey of the, well, soul

TwitterFacebook

The studio behind Inside Out and Toy Story 4 is ready to get existential again.

At D23 Saturday, Pixar revealed the first details from Soul, a new original feature coming in 2020 — including information about the premise and plot, and reveals of its star-studded cast.

Jamie Foxx leads the voice cast as Joe, who teaches music at a middle school but has dreamt all his life of playing at a prestigious New York jazz club called Half Note.

In footage shown exclusively at D23, we see Joe playing the piano in a rehearsal with a small jazz band, as he explains in his voiceover narration how it feels: “When I move, my only purpose on this planet is to play,” he says. “It’s what I was meant to do.”  Read more…
