Deeply committed Big Mac fan eats his 30,000th burger

TwitterFacebook

Don Gorske of Wisconsin is known for one thing only: his love of and devotion to the McDonald’s Big Mac. On Friday, he reaffirmed that love when he chowed down on his 30,000th order.

Per Wisconsin’s Fond du Lac Reporter, Gorske – who holds the Guinness World Record for Most Big Macs Consumed – ate his landmark burger at the same McDonald’s franchise where he first tried the menu item back in the early 1970s.

‘Black Panther’ director explains what happened to Killmonger’s mother

TwitterFacebook

Black Panther‘s Killmonger is a great villain partially because he’s three-dimensional. His motivations genuinely make sense, and his complicated, tragic backstory makes him a sympathetic character, too.

On the commentary for the Black Panther Blu-Ray, director Ryan Coogler adds another detail to that backstory. We already knew that Killmonger’s mother wasn’t Wakandan — N’Jobu, Killmonger’s father, met her in Oakland — but it wasn’t clear what happened to her.

SEE ALSO: Deleted ‘Black Panther’ scene has big reveal about Okoye and W’Kabi

According to Coogler, when N’Jobu and a young Zuri are conversing at the beginning of the film, just before King T’Chaka arrives, they’re actually trying to find a way to break Killmonger’s mother out of prison. It’s a mission that never came to fruition. Read more…

Hawaii volcano eruption brings the state’s worst earthquake in decades

TwitterFacebook

Right on the heels of Thursday’s volcano eruption in Hawaii, a pair of earthquakes struck the state as residents contended with ongoing evacuations and noxious gas in the air.

The first, a 5.4-magnitude quake according to the United States Geological Survey, occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time near the southern coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, just south of Kilauea volcano. A second, 6.9-magnitude quake followed roughly an hour later.

According to the USGS, the latter one was the state’s strongest since a 7.1-magnitude quake that hit in “almost exactly the same location” in 1975. Read more…

Car crash becomes national news because a Waymo minivan was involved

TwitterFacebook

Two moving cars collided in Arizona on Friday. If one of them hadn’t been fitted with Waymo self-driving tech, no one would have noticed.

The crash occurred in Chandler, Ariz. when a Honda sedan swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid another accident. It then struck the Waymo van, which the company claims was operating in manual mode — which means the human behind the wheel was in charge — at the time.

A video captured from the van’s own camera and released by Waymo shows the 5-second period leading up to the crash.

The sequence of events seen in this short clip are pretty clear. The Honda swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in the intersection and seemed to momentarily lose control as it crossed the median. Waymo’s van, traveling in the center lane on the opposite side of the street, appears to have been a victim of circumstance. Read more…

Ultimate ‘Star Wars’ fan runs Darth Vader-shaped route every May the 4th

TwitterFacebook

Have you ever liked a movie franchise so much you ran multiple miles for it?

Me either.

But every year on May the 4th — aka Star Ward Day — Reddit user runwithpugs runs a 4-mile route in his neighborhood that’s shaped like Darth Vader’s helmet.

If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is.

I have so many questions. Did they just wake up one May 4 and ask, “How can I honor this great American franchise?” and automatically jump to running a route that’s shaped like one of the iconic characters?

Either way, I’m impressed. I never thought about running in the shape of Samwise Gamgee’s foot because I love Lord of the Rings, but now that seems like a nice thing to aspire to. Read more…

This ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ yearbook quote about coming out is so, so, so clever

TwitterFacebook

It’s not easy picking a senior quote — how can only a few words encapsulate your whole high school experience?

Some students take yearbook quotes seriously, quoting actual life lessons they’ve learned in their four years of high school. Others opt for more lighthearted sayings or clever ways to slip profanities past school officials. One even went as far as thanking Satan in her senior quote.

Predictably, Trump appoints Dr. Oz to be a government health adviser

Who better to put in charge of our children’s health than a man who believes apple juice is loaded with arsenic?

Well, everyone’s weirdest dreams have come trueOn Friday, President Trump announced he had appointed television doctor Mehmet Oz to serve on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.
