Let’s all strive to live like Oprah dancing to ‘Havana’ at a photoshoot

TwitterFacebook

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about the only nice thing that happened on the internet this week.

In case her list of accomplishments and talents wasn’t long enough, we’re here to remind everyone that on top of being an actress, writer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, Oprah Winfrey is also an extremely smooth dancer.

On Wednesday, Oprah’s close personal friend and A Wrinkle In Time co-star Mindy Kaling shared a damn-near perfect moment she captured on video: Oprah dancing.

SEE ALSO: I’m obsessed with the cast of ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ and you should be too

But this wasn’t just any casual little jig. Oprah was at a photo shoot busting out some soulful, smooth, sassy moves for the camera. She was also looking fresh to death — wearing white pants, a poppin’ yellow tunic and scarf, and a super stylish hat. Read more…

After a painful Jimmy Kimmel interview, Kanye West drops a new track

TwitterFacebook

Kanye West never leaves our news cycle — whether he’s there to stir up boring, gratuitous social media controversy or simply share music.

Thankfully, this weekend gave us the latterDJ Clark Kent shared Kanye’s latest track, “XTCY,” on Twitter sometime Friday night.

SEE ALSO: Here’s what Kimmel said after Kanye said we should try and ‘love’ more

It’s his first track released since he dropped five Kanye-produced albums in five weeks.

Credit where it’s technically due: “XTCY” is a decent track. And frankly, it’s a welcome relief from the controversy stirred up from West’s interview with Jimmy Kimmel earlier this week. West was initially silent after Kimmel confronted him about his past attitude towards Bush (West famously said “George Bush doesn’t like black people”) and his current view of Trump. Read more…

All the wild facts we learned about ‘Doom Eternal’ from the QuakeCon reveal

These stoner hackers want machine learning to save us from sick weed

TwitterFacebook

Nothing harshes a good mellow like sick buds. Thankfully, there may one day be an app for that.

Hidden from the hazy Friday afternoon of Las Vegas, tucked away in the basement of the Flamingo casino, a group of likeminded hackers and security researchers gathered to explore “DIY cannabis tech” at DEF CON’s Cannabis Village. One researcher in particular, Harry Moreno, told the rather laid-back crowd that he believed that machine learning could one day solve a huge problem for home-grow enthusiasts: determining whether or not, and in what capacity, a marijuana plant is sick.

Twitter suspends Proud Boys before white supremacist rally

TwitterFacebook

Well, apparently Twitter does have a line when it comes to unhinged hate speech.

The company suspended accounts associated with the Proud Boys ahead of the white supremacist Unite the Right rally in Washington, D.C., this weekend. The move was originally reported by BuzzFeed News.

SEE ALSO: How the dominoes in Alex Jones’ social media empire all fell at once

Started by VICE co-founder Gavin McInnes, the Proud Boys are very thinly veiled white nationalists in Fred Perry polo shirts. Former member Jason Kessler organized the first Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, at which counter-protester Heather Heyer was murdered. He was “expelled” from the group only after the ensuing controversy.  Read more…

Trump Jr. shares a fake Photoshop of his daddy’s approval rating

TwitterFacebook

Donald Trump Jr. was caught red-handed for a terrible Photoshop job, but this time it wasn’t because he airbrushed his pores into oblivion.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Don Jr. shared a CNN report comparing Trump’s approval ratings with statistics from Obama’s presidency.

“Amazing,” Trump Jr. captioned it. “I guess there is a magic wand to make things happen and @realdonaldtrump seems to have it.”

SEE ALSO: Airbrushed photo of Trump Jr. and his girlfriend inspires hilarious comparisons

Except, @realdonaldtrump doesn’t seem to “have it” because the screenshot is a poorly edited graphic that makes the current president’s approval say 50 percent instead of the actual 40 percent. In other words, Trump Jr. has (ironically) participated in spreading fake news. Read more…

Hackers can seize practically all your online accounts, and it’s your voicemail’s fault

TwitterFacebook

Who would have thought that, in the end, it would be the humble voicemail that would do us all in?

Your Google, Microsoft, Apple, WhatsApp, and even Signal accounts all have an Achilles’ heel — the same one, in fact. And it turns out that if you’re not careful, a hacker could use that weakness to take over your online identity.

Or so claims self-described “security geek” Martin Vigo. Speaking to an enthusiastic collection of hackers and security researchers at the annual DEF CON convention in Las Vegas, Vigo explained how he managed to reset passwords for a wide-ranging set of online accounts by taking advantage of the weakest link in the security chain: your voicemail.
