What to watch on Hulu in January 2019

TwitterFacebook

As if there wasn’t already enough to be excited about in 2019, Hulu’s January selection is delivering even more New Year’s hype. Here’s what’s streaming.

From Stephen King’s greatest hits, including Cujo and Pet Sematary, to the kid-friendliest of flicks, like Inside Out and Chicken Run, Hulu’s January movie picks are all over the place—in a good way. You’ve got Annihilation next to the Twilight series next to the Lethal Weapon franchise next to A Charlie Brown Valentine. With so much to choose from, what’s not to love?

On the TV side of things, you’ve got Season 2 of FX’s Atlanta (more on that later) alongside tons of mid-season premieres and loads of back-logged reality TV, like Season 6 of Project Runway All Stars and Season 7 of Dance Moms. Read more…

This cyborg houseplant can automatically drive itself toward light

TwitterFacebook

We usually think of plants as vegetables or home decoration, but Harpreet Sareen, an MIT Media Lab researcher,  developed a plant-robot hybrid that moves on its own in response to the changes happening in its environmentElowan is a houseplant, but it is much more than that. Sareen has attached electrodes to its stems, leaves, and ground. The plant’s bioelectrochemical signals are sent to the robot by those electrodes, and this way the plant can drive itself in the direction of the light. Elowan is opening up a new world of possibilities, where non-human living organisms could be augmented to create new interactive devices that are organic instead of entirely artificial.  Read more…

TwitterFacebook

A KiwiBot, an automated food delivery robot which is present on UC Berkeley’s campus, caught fire on Friday afternoon.

In a post, the company explained the incident was due to a faulty battery which had been mistakenly installed instead of a functioning one.

Hillary Clinton wrote a lovely letter to an 8-year-old girl who lost her class election

TwitterFacebook

Hillary Clinton knows a thing or two about tough election losses.

That’s apparently what compelled the former 2016 candidate for president to write a letter to 8-year-old Martha Kennedy Morales. The school-aged girl recently faced off against a boy from her class in an election for class president, and she lost by one vote.

The story of what happened to Morales, who attends school in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., made its way to Clinton via a grapevine of D.C. insiders, The Washington Post reports. TwitterFacebook

Here’s your chance to go deep in the bowels of a man’s soul — his bathroom.

A Twitter thread posted Friday asked women what’s the weirdest thing they’ve seen in a dude’s bathroom. It starts off with a plunger-hairbrush hybrid contraption that must be used for plunging and then scrubbing the bowl. Whatever it is, it’s weird.

Believe the hype: Weighted blankets have an online cult following for a reason

TwitterFacebook

Essentials Week spotlights unexpected items that make our daily lives just a little bit better.

From Twitter to Reddit to Instagram, tons of internet folks are raving about a glorified tarp.

Weighted blankets, also known as gravity or anxiety blankets, gained the attention of the self-care community late last year and have been picking up widespread (and emphatic) support ever since.

Purported to assist with stress and sleep, weighted blankets are exactly what they sound like — blankets with added weight, typically around 10% of the user’s body weight. As you slide under the heavy, comforter-like fabric, you will likely experience a therapeutic sensation, one that I would compare to that extra sip of wine taking you from conversationally relaxed to full-blown tipsy.  Read more…

People are dragging Offset on Twitter for his manipulative Cardi B stunt

TwitterFacebook

In a stunning if ultimately unsurprising display of ashiness, Cardi B’s recently estranged husband Offset showed up onstage at the Rolling Loud festival to beg Cardi to take him back after he cheated on her.

Offset’s “apology” included flowers and a series of cakes that spelled out “TAKE ME BACK;” he was escorted off the stage after Cardi B expressed discomfort that he interrupted her show.

As and after the drama unfolded onstage, people on Twitter took Offset to task for his stunt, rightfully claiming that his grand gesture was more “manipulative performance of headassery” than “super effective way to apologize for sleeping around on your wife.”  Read more…
