Meet Tango, the weirdest horse on Twitter

TwitterFacebook

Move over, Lil’ Sebastian. There’s a new viral horse in town: Tango.

Twitter user @mckellogs recently started sharing photos of her horse Tango. As someone who identifies as “not a horse girl,” I was skeptical until this particular Tango thread pulled me in.

That’s the Tango magic.

@mckellogs told Mashable that her family adopted Tango and his mother, Lulu, after their owners could no longer afford them. Tango has since grown up largely independently, rarely socializing with other horses. As result he’s become something of an … individual.

Here’s how @mckellogs describes him: Read more…

Twitter wants advertisers to ditch Tucker Carlson after his latest xenophobic remarks

TwitterFacebook

Words still occasionally have consequences — even on Fox News.

After Tucker Carlson accused immigrants of making America “dirtier” on his show Thursday night, outrage quickly followed. On Friday, one of Carlson’s most prominent advertisers, Pacific Life, announced that it would be pausing advertising on the show while the company “re-evaluated” its relationship with the program.

Here is Tucker’s original comment in full:

“Nice people, no one doubts that, but as an economic matter, this is insane,” Tucker said of low-skilled immigrants. “It’s indefensible, so nobody even tries to defend it. Instead, our leaders demand that you shut up and accept this. We have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor, they tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer, and dirtier, and more divided. Immigration is a form of atonement. Previous leaders of our country committed sins; we must pay for those sins by welcoming an endless chain of migrant caravans.” Read more…

Michelle Obama’s letter to her younger self is so tender it has broken me

TwitterFacebook

This is One Good Thing, a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week

As a perfect person, it’s hard to imagine Michelle Obama having any doubts about herself. Hasn’t she always assumed that she was brilliant, graceful, and exceptionally good at gardening? Didn’t she always think that she would one day become one of the most powerful people in the world and achieve it by being … nice?

According to Obama’s new memoir, Becoming, she wasn’t always so confident.

The best apps of 2018

TwitterFacebook

The end of 2018 is upon us and if you didn’t download any new apps, then you’re missing out. I know — it’s sometimes surprising that 10 years into the App Store, there are still enough fresh ideas to make it worth downloading an unfamiliar name.

But, from apps that gave us new ways to edit photos and video to games we just couldn’t put down, developers still managed to find new ways to surprise and delight us in 2018.

SEE ALSO: The best tech of 2018

Here’s a look back at some of our favorites. We’ve listed the download links and prices, but as always take “free” with a grain of salt since most apps these days rely on subscriptions and in-app purchases to make money. Read more…

Got WiFi dead spots? Consider a mesh network system

TwitterFacebook

Ad Content from Linksys

With so many smart home gadgets in the house these days, you may need WiFi in areas like the basement, garage, or even outside to power your smart doorbell or outdoor camera. But chances are your current router doesn’t cover your entire home, and you’re left with dead spots – those areas in your house where your wireless signal inexplicably seems to disappear.

With all the devices, metal appliances, and architectural interference in the average home, it’s no wonder why even the fastest, most powerful WiFi router can miss a few spots. But before you invest in another wifi extender that delivers a weaker signal, think about using a mesh WiFi system.  Read more…

Facebook disbands secretive research lab amid reorganization

TwitterFacebook

Facebook’s secretive research lab, where the company developed new hardware like its Portal speakers and researched moonshot projects like brain computer interfaces, is no more.

Building 8, the division Facebook created in 2016 to house some of its most ambitious projects, has been disbanded and the projects have been redistributed to other groups within the social media company.

The change, which was first reported by Business Insider, marks the end of the “Building 8” brand, though the group’s work will continue on.

Facebook created Building 8 in 2016, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg committing to pour “hundreds of millions of dollars into this effort over the next few years” in order to “to advance our mission of connecting the world.” To lead the new Building 8 work, the company poached former DARPA head Regina Dugan from Google, where she oversaw the company Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group.  Read more…

A copy of the Jonas Brothers’ ‘Burning Up’ ironically survived a house fire

TwitterFacebook

The powers that be have a sick sense of humor.

When the Gregory family went back to their house to survey the wreckage after it burned down, they found salvaged an ironic relic: a copy of the Jonas Brothers’ tour book titled “Burning Up.”

Yikes.
